Birchwood

Birchwood is an invention of Warrington New Town.

During the 2nd World War, Birchwood was home to a munitions factory employing 30,000 people.

After the war the factory closed, and Warrington council was faced with the problem of what to do with the area. Part of the area is an open space with pleasant walks.

Risley Moss is preserved as an important nature reserve.   The mounds above the former bunkers where the explosives were stored are now used for children to play on.

The Name Birchwood was chosen as many young birches had sprung up amongst all the dereliction. Today, Birchwood is known for its large out of town shopping area.
